Großglockner

• Elevation: 3798m
• Prominence: 2,423 m (7,949 ft)  (2nd rank in the Alps)
• First ascend on 28 July 1800, by carpenter brothers Sepp and Martin Klotz, Martin Reicher and two other unknown carpenters

Grossglockner is the highest mountain in Austria. Eventhough not even 4000m high, it is rankend 2nd highest in prominence within the Alps just after Mont Blanc. There are multiple routes up to the top ranging from the original routes mostly trekking and scrambling like route to steep ice couloirs to even vertical North face mixed routes.

Near Grossglockner runs Grossglockner High Alpine Road (Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße) which has been built between 1930 and 1935. It’s highest point at 2572 meters, but it’s main attraction – and one of the whole Austria’s too – Kaiser Franz-Josef Höhe on the end of the side road at elevation of 2369m standing just opposite of Grossglockner with splendid views across the Pasteze glacier.
